Hello. My Name is Inigo Montoya.

You Killed my father. Prepare to die.

I'm sorry. So, so sorry. This post is likely to drive many of you to despondency, or at least a few moments of ennui. Or even Schadenfreude or Weltschmertz or something. There may even be angst, but it just can't be helped.

I know that there are many of you out there who hope that I shall eventually give up my sporadic and inexplicable affection for the ways of the wang, as it were, and give myself over fully to the love that dare not speak its name, however I fell in love last night.

On the advice of The Esteemed Lala, Her Surreal Highness and I took The Princess Bride out from the liberry a few days ago. We watched it last night and I'm afraid that my heart has been lost to Mandy Patinkin.

Utterly lost.

I usually fall in love with the heroine but she really didn't have enough of a rack for me so I had to bend my rather bent affections elsewhere, and I'm afraid they landed upon poor Mr. Patinkin.

I am even at this moment restraining myself, manfully, womanfully, personfully even, from penning embarrassing sweat-stained mash notes to him. I really can't see that it would do either of us any good, and besides, I can't find my pen.

Or my mash.

All histrionics aside, it's one of the loveliest movies I've seen in years, and Mr. Montoya is one of the most endearing characters. It was also delicious to see Andre the Giant, who sadly passed away in 1993 at the age of 46. Despite his massive size (7'4" or something) and his frightening appearance, he was, from what I can gather, a kind and gentle man (who spent his spare time beating people up on television but well, we all make our rent money where we can.) I remember him well from my many nights of sitting around drinking beer and watching wrestling with someone who pretended to be terribly refined. (No matter what accent one fakes, the Bog Irish always shines through in the end. Yes, that was catty but as only one person who reads this knows to whom I refer I felt I could allow myself a tiny meow in this case.)

The entire film was charming. It was supposed to go back to the liberry last night, but seeing I'm paying a day's late charges anyhow, I may just allow myself one more viewing before it goes back.

And Mandy, if you read this -- call me. You know you want to.

Comments:
That is one of my favourite movies of all time!

I love that movie. So many funny moments. I had an afternoon of tv-knitting planned, now I must go find Princess Bride.

My husband watched that movie with the kids last weekend for the first time, which has led to multiple utterances of the word "inconceivable" from all parties!

Holy crap. I can't believe you'd never seen it before! Of course, people say the same to me all the time about stuff I never intend to see.

DH and I were also late in joining the crowds of fans of this movie, and I pull it out to watch when I want some laughs. I wonder how many lines from Princess Bride are repeated on a weekly basis by all its fans.

Another fun classic, with lots of memorable lines, is Young Frankenstein, IMO one of Gene Wilder's best efforts.

You love Mandy, too? Honey, join the club.

I love that movie. The book is wonderful too. It's one of the few instances where (I feel) the movie lives up to the book.

Should I tell you that he lives across the street from me in Chicago? No? Okay, I won't. ;-p

Thats my Favorite movie, The first song my husband played for me was from the soundtrack! Do see Mandy on Criminal Minds, he's a nice looking man.

Be prepared for the spontaneous uttering of many important quotations from the movie, especially while at work. Most popular in my place of employment: "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

It's a fabulous movie. You will want to watch it many, many times. Fine book as well.

Have fun storming the castle!

Seriously, if you like this one, try Willow also, although Princess Bride and Totoro are my hands down favorite movies, especially for snow days or sick-and-laying-on-the-couch-waiting-for-death days. Everyone in my family loves them, except the step-daughter, who prefers Anne of Greene Gables (I'm sure that says something about her too).

Great movie! I love how kids and adults can enjoy it together on completely different levels.

You know that I gave myself up a LONG time ago to the love that dare not speak its name. That being said, I have been lustily in love with Mandy Patinkin for years, starting with "Yentl." It seems I am now in very good company.

Am in Florida, as you may know. Met a woman from Vancouver, B.C., just this morning, apropos of nothing, except that I immediately thought of you, just because.

This is truly the bestest of movies. The song that plays over the end credits is the song that my husband and I danced our first dance to at our wedding. We say "Have fun storming the castle" whenever the girls leave on a playdate. And yes, they are 15 and 17.

Oh yeah, I loved him in the tv show Chicago Hope and even more in Dead Like Me!

Go. Get. Impromptu. It's older, might be hard to find, but it's MY favorite - and Mandy is DIVINE in it. It's Hugh Grant's first big break, but he plays the sickly Chopin, so it's doable. And Judy Davis is also so hot in it. It's everything you'll like. Promise. Her Highness might like it, too. Oh, Bernadette Peters is in it! And Emma Thompson! But Mandy is rad. xoxo

Man, I love that movie. And Mandy Patinkin really is the most mash-note-worthy of them all. I only saw it last year, and it's really a favourite.

I had the same reaction when I saw the movie - I love that man! I found him quite difficult to stalk. I wish you better luck.

you say that word a lot, i don't thik you know what it means...I love Inigo...he's my fav character. I. love-love-love. this. movie. Must go watch after my bike ride. :)

You may enjoy the short lived Dead Like Me series that he was on also. I think it ran for two seasons on HBO, but it was hilarious, they did release it on dvd.
Enjay

That movie was a favorite when my kids were growing up. #1 son fully believed there were giants in this world; I remember him using Andre the Giant as an example.

I can't believe you hadn't seen this movie before! Inconceivable! It's so great. OK- I have to go watch it now.

I luuurrvve that movie. If Singe were my cat, he would have been named The Dread Pirate Roberts. But Mr.Q nixed it, since he hadn't seen TBP at that point (a sorry lack, which has long since been rectified.) And Mandy...swoon! Yes, dreamy indeed.

(Also, I agree with the "Impromptu" suggestion...just sayin'!)

Love the movie. Love Mandy even more!! Must go rent that one again...

I love the over-the-top sword fighting choreography at the top of the cliff! "I - am not left-handed!"

Oh I may SWOON!

Love the movie. Love it. Can't wait to introduce my kids to it. Now you need to watch it repeatedly so that at least 2 or 3 times a day some PB quote pops into your mind. If you voice it & someone responds, chances are they're worth knowing.

Absolutely a favorite. Read the book, too, someday; a few lines in it will help to explain some puzzling transitions in the movie.
Watch out for the ROUS.

That's my all time favorite movie. There was a time when the hubby was at sea (Navy) and I had looked up those odd little holidays online somewhere, so I shot him an email wishing him a happy True Love day. His response? "To blave?" So I sent back "Wuv, twu wuv...." And we've never sat down and watched the movie together. :)

Mmmmmmm, Mandy! Yes, he is one of the best things about that movie. (Sorry, Cary Elwes... you're cute, but in a much more Teen People kind of way.) Truly one of the most quotable (and quoth, in our house) movies of them all. Just don't ever attend a midnight movie showing of it. The fans bellowing out the lines in unison from start to finish sort of spoil it. Just IMO, of course.

Princess Bride is one of the movies on my top 5 list.. its especially wonderful to quote from. One of my favorite lines is:
"Tyrone, you know how much I love watching you work, but I've got my country's 500th anniversary to plan, my wedding to arrange, my wife to murder and Guilder to frame for it; I'm swamped."

Must also find copy of Princess Bride now. I did enjoy that film. And the book. And the happiness.

Go find Chicago Hope. I have a vague recollection that he sings. ~x~

I third the motion that you should look up Dead Like Me. Mandy Patinkin is fantastic in it-wry and dark, and he swears well.

I cannot believe you haven't seen it. Must be a Canadian thing. One of my all time favorites. Someone mentioned Dead Like Me - I've only see a bit of that but LOVED it. Must rent the series on DVD- meaning we both have to do that.

Did you know Mr. Mandy sings, too (I couldn't remember if he sang in the movie)? The standards in his unique voice, he can sing me to bed anytime.

"Not another word, I MEAN IT!"

"Anybody want a peanut?"

"ARRGGGG!!!"

Love Mandy, and Andre together. Perfect.

I used to love it when Patinkin sang on Chicago Hope, and much to my husband's amusement, I purchased one of his CD's which I enjoy mightily.

The esteemed Lala has impeccable taste in films. Clearly.

i loved this movie so much, i bought the dvd. my younger daughter stole it when she moved out, and i stole it back when she moved back in!

ROUS!

You are certainly not the only one to have fallen for Inigo Montoya (or Mandy). The Princess Bride is definitely on the list of movies that I can watch over and over and over again, despite being able to recite along with several long-ish passages of dialogue.

I can't believe you haven't seen it before now! (And have you read the book?) I think that my second-favorite line is, "I don't think that words means what you think it means." So good. Maybe I've got to go rent and re-watch that movie myself...

FINALLY. Sheesh!

"I clearly cannot drink from the cup in front of me!"

I've always meant to read the book, I so love this movie!

For some particularly nice examples of Mandy Patinkin singing, check out The Secret Garden, in which he plays the troubled Uncle Archibald. Based on the Francis Hodgson Burnett book, which I loved as a child, but the musical adds several layers of meaning for adults, too.

Isn't it the best?! If you come from the UK you cn spend your time spotting beautiful bits of Derbyshire converted into improbable locations too.

"I do not think you know what that word means."

LOVE this movie.

I'm such an enabler! http://www.thinkgeek.com/tshirts/popculture/9f70/

OMGOMGOMG! This is the best movie ever, I think, for the sheer amount of enjoyment it brings. You will be quoting it forever, because I've been quoting it for 20 year, since I first saw it in the theater.

Also, I went to a family wedding one time, and the priest was like Peter Cook lite. I almost blew my top trying to hold the laughter in. Mawwiage...that bwessed event...is what bwings us togever today.

Rachel also recommends Impromptu (she and I should be BFFs) and I totally agree. It's terribly funny and Mandy is fantastic in it.

A wonderful movie... I love the scene where Vizzini falls over dead. It cracks me up every time.

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly less well-known is this: never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha...

I fell in love with Mandy while watching one particular episode of Chicago Hope (Thanks, Judy G, for reminding me of the name of the show).

In that episode he sang and danced for the pediatric ward -- he had a few props, but mostly it was his incredible talent. It was as good as live theater except on a very small screen. I've loved him ever since.

Perhaps I should rent the Princess Bride. I've never seen it.

charli
charlizeen on yahoooooooooo

I absolutely ADORE that movie. I own it and years ago when things weren't that great, I'd watch it to make me laugh. Made me laugh everytime. I've got the damn thing completely memorized! (As I said, things weren't great - watched that movie a LOT back then.)

I can't believe you had never seen The Princess Bride. I and most of the people I know have watched it so many times we can quote along with it. Classic movie.

Best movie ever!
Word of advice? Go ahead and buy it. It's cheaper than renting it every time you want to see it!

Oh hey, it doesn't matter that you *hadn't* seen it, on account of 'cause you have now! And like many of my prior commenting colleagues, I'm going to have to get it to watch again soon. My daughter may have a copy -- but then, I may want a copy for my very own self.

I've always loved Mandy too - in a kindly, grandmotherly, proud Jewish Mama kind of way only, of course. (Want to buy a nice bridge in Brooklyn?) I have been an ever-greater fan of Criminal Minds since the beginning -- still am, but I miss him. LOVED "Gideon" (did you know he has a son named Gideon? The actor, not the character!). Isn't it fun, though, to find a terrific movie like that? And if you watch it 32 more times -- you'll find 32 things you'd missed before. I'd put it on ANY Interminable Knitting Project list.

I remember watching that movie and Labyrinth (David Bowie in tight leather pants) repeatedly as a kid, but they work well for adults too! I already have a copy of the Princess Bride, so Labyrinth (or the much promoted Impromptu) might be next.

What, nobody mentioned his stunning work in "Elmo in Grouchland?" And he sings in this one too.

'Dead Like Me' was great, a definite go get it. And 'Yentl.' Nearly full frontal Mandy.

I must go fan myself.

This is one of my very very favorite movies!
I once worked where I had to walk past Ms. Montoya's office. Every day, under my breath, I muttered "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die" I never quite said it to her face... but I came soooooo close!
Welcome to my fave flick!

I love him too! That movie makes me want to learn to fence. It is so wonderful.

Read the book! It is amazingly close to the movie (entire sections of dialogue lifted right from the book) and is so, so good.

"He's really rather short on... charm."

I love this movie. And I owned it. I loaned it to a friend who claimed she returned it. Clearly she valued the movie more than my friendship.

One of these days I'll get around to re-purchasing it. sigh!
